For a mere $36/month Japan residents are getting 100Mbps fiber-optic broadband and free VoIP. 5.5m have now added the faster service, in addition to 23m homes which already have 8Mbps service. But the increased demand is starting to take a toll on the tubes, which hit 158Gbps at major exchanges.

Rest the story for those interested in this sort of thing:

Japan certainly knows what they're doing in the technology depart. They always seem a few years ahead of everyone else.

You should some of their cell phones (keitai). They're pretty crazy!

Oh, and I've just got 1.5 dsl for $19.99 a month. I'm on a deal they had going for a year. I think $40 is too much for just a 1.5mb connection, and that's what they charge for regular service. I would glady pay $30-35 a month for 100mb connection, or even 10mb. Maybe as the faster lines get going they'll lower prices for slower connections 1.5-3.0mb connections.

It'll be intresting to see what happens. One things for sure, I can't handle 56k...haha!

Yea, yea, so who cares? They're paying $45 a pound for beef and what, $9 a gallon for gas? So let them have their cheap broadband. I'm sure they're paying for it somehow.

You can get that speed for the same prize as Japan here in Sweden too.
At the moment I got 25Mbps for 195 SEK (about $20) but I can get 100Mbps for 350 SEK (about $35)

Let’s do the math…

155 yen / liter * (3.7854 liters / 1 gallon) = 586.737 yen per gallon

And then converting the Japanese yen to US dollars we get:
586.737 yen / 1 gallon * ($1 / 114 yen) = $5.09 per gallon

Tokyo is one of the most exspenvie cities in the world, yes, but their wages are also pretty good. A teenager cleaning fish can make $9 an hour, grunt work... Also public transportation is more widely used. I have a friend living in Sapporo Japan (north Japan) who is also getting this service. I'll have to ask her if there is a significant prince range between the two cities.

Not sure about average beef costs. I know Kobe beef is like $300 a steak, though! Laughing ...must be pretty darn good, right!
