I'm not sure what the average price of DSL and Cable is, last time I checked it was $40 a month. I've had DSL for a year now on a promotinal deal; $19.99 a month ....that ended and think It'll be $40, but if I'm going to pay that I want cable, which is faster.

But as we see fiver optics become more and more mainstream, what happens to Cable and DSL? Are we going to see a price drop on these two fronts? That's what I'd love to see! Keep cable and DSL, just drop the price! Very Happy

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the price to drop anytime soon on
cable or DSL not until Fiber Optics becomes as mainstream and avaliable
every where like cable and or DSL is now. Crying or Very sad

I agree. fiber is not wide spread at all. In my area(San Francisco), they are not even talking about fiber at all.

Yeah, I asked DVDCoverArt if he knew if it was in my area, Colorado. I was told no. He lives in Utah, makes me wonder why Utah of all places has got it. Surprised

I know in Japan they have the 100mb connection.

Hmmm I guess now we play the waiting game...Rolling Eyes HURRY UP!! Evil or Very Mad Laughing

DSL is currently running up to 24Mbs (for IPTV) and can be pair bonded so that two lines can feed your house for 48Mbs. So, I wouldn't say that DSL is "slow". Sure, fiber is faster but a lot more expensive to run (DSL infrastructure is already there).

AFAIK, Verizon are the only ones rolling out FTTU.

Cable is normally significantly slower than DSL on the Upload side. What is the upload speed of cable vs DSL in your area?

Yeah, that's something I noticed when I first announced that I had become a DSL user. My upload speed was the same or better than cable users.

I was looking at cable for now, going with Comcast's deal of $19.99 for 6 months. Then I'll decide which I liked better.

But right now, I'm having a terrible time just finding what Comcast offeres as far speed download/upload speeds. They just keep going on about how it's 7 times fasters Dial-up and yada yada yada faster than DSL.

I think Qwest and Comcast are my only options as far Greeley, Co. goes. Mad

Just a word of caution with comcast. They started cracking down on some of their biggest users. The "unlimited" internet comcast advertise means unlimited time, not unlimited bandwidth. If you are d/ling more than 300+ gigs a month, you'll most likely get a call from their abuse/policy group to ask you to keep it down and if you don't, they'll cut you off w/o notice. This has happened to me and some other ppl that I know. Really lame.

Thanks, Herk. Smile

That's a a lot of downloading a month, 300 gigs! But also with Comcast, they want me to buy a modem for like $75. I guess I could get a router for cheaper, but...I don't know much about them. Embarassed

Qwest has DSL for 26.99 a month, which I'm guessing is what I had 2.5 or 3mbps, and then their 5mbps is 36.99.

We also have a wireless service here called whatwire: http://www.what-wire.com/
I'll have to give them a call.

I found this site, probably will give it a try: http://www.oasishighspeed.com

It's available in my area, I can switch from Qwest to them without having to buy a new modem, they were the only ones who gave it to me straight, no $19.99 a month!!! ...then come to find out it's $39.99 + modem etc. etc.

Deluxe DSL ar 1.5 MB Down/ 896K Up for $26.99 a month.

But it keeps saying:

Oasis internet acess 4.99
+Qwest DSl (1.5) 22.00
= 26.99

I guess they go through Qwest, or bill you through Qwest. I'll have to give them a call.

Just wanted to point it out for anyone else who might be looking for cheaper DSL.

Just remember, you use your upload side when uploading to DVDCoverArt, or when someone downloads from you. For example, if you share files with others through email or Messenger you are using your upload side.

By the way, Comcast caps your upload speed at 256 Megabits and performance is impacted by the number of Comcast members sharing the same node you are connected too and how many members of that node are online at the same time. I have had Comcast in the past, so believe me I know.

Just got switched over to Comcast (from the failed Adelphia). First thing Comcast did was increase the price by 3 dollars a month. Upload speed seems slower and at times during the day and evening the internet slows to a crawl. Had a cable modem for over 7 years but DSL is starting to look good.
